How do I get started with Historical Fencing?
Follow the new student process described here
When is the next free trial class?
Free trial classess are usually available in the first week of every second month. If you can’t wait that long, there is also always the option of just coming along to watch anytime, or even jumping straight in and paying for a class.
Sign up to the newsletter to be notified as soon as registrations open for the next free trial classes.
What equipment is required?
There is no equipment required to try out a class for the first time.
Once you start coming regularly you are expected to get your own mask and, eventually, your own sword and protective equipment. Fortuitously a mask is included if you begin with the three month newcomer deal.
If you are curious about what gear is required for sparring and what your options are, we maintain a comprehensive gear guide here.
There is also a stock of equipment available for sale at the school and you can order custom equipment too! Just send us an email to order something.
How much does it cost to learn?
For new students I usually recommend the new student package. However, there are a range of possible fees from a single casual class all the way up to paying 12 months in advance.
The fees for regular adult classes are fully explained on the fees page and the fees for kids and teenage classes can be found on the kids fees page.
Private lessons have their own fee structure which you can find on the private lessons page.
If you are interested in having a sword fighting themed party or corporate function, or if you would like assistance with a Theatre, Stunt, or TV project please contact us and we can discuss your individual needs.
When are the classes?
There are classes throughout the week. See the timetable here.
Where are classes held?
Most classes are held in Preston at the Melbourne Salle but some are in Box Hill. Box Hill classes are noted on the timetable as being in Box Hill, otherwise you should assume the class is in Preston.
Find both venues with the directions, maps and pt information on the contact page.
What is historical fencing / HEMA / HMA?
Historical Fencing, also known as HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), as WMA (Western Martial Arts), and as HMA (Historical Martial Arts), is an umbrella term covering the art of combat with weapons informed by historical, usually European, practice. Depending upon the specific style being studied it can include wrestling, grappling, kicking and punching arts as well.
What weapons / systems do you teach?
We regularly teach 15th and 16th century Italian Longsword/Two Handed Sword, 16th C Single Sword, Sword & Buckler, 17th C Italian and Iberian Rapier, Rapier & Dagger, Renaissance Dagger and Wrestling.
We sometimes run one off workshops or short courses covering any weapon that takes our interest. Some past classes have included: Spear, Halberd, Armoured fighting, Sabre, Smallsword, Rapier & Lantern (in the dark), and more!
