I33 Sword & Buckler Course

Join us over 5 weeks as we journey through the oldest sword & shield treatise from Europe – MS I33, which was written in the 1320’s.

The style emphasizes closing and dominating actions to remain safe and defeat the opponent. Everything is a weapon for you to use, including your opponent’s shield.

Details
The course runs for 5 consecutive Wednesday evening classes, starting on the 24th of October and concluding on the 21st of November. Classes will be held at the Melbourne Salle (12/62-64 Oakover Rd, Preston) and will start at 8:30 pm and finish at 9:45 pm. Wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.

Pricing
As always, the first class is free. Bookings are required – we need to ensure there’s equipment for everyone. If you’re already a monthly all-classes-included member, this course is included too!

Otherwise it’s $70 for students of the SHF and affiliated schools, or $145 for new students (this covers the cost of the class, as well as school membership and attendance at all SHF classes for the duration of the course).

Session 2 11:45 – 12:45 will be all about the two handed sword
Session 3 1 – 2 pm will be all about sword & shield.

Sidesword Open Tournament

The Sidesword Open is a set tournaments with a focus on historical techniques.

Schedule
(subject to change due to registration numbers)

9 am – hall opens for rego and warmup
10 am – Sword & Buckler
11 am – Single sword Tournament
12 pm – Lunch break
1 pm – More single sword tournament and finals
3 pm – Pub

Rules
The Sword & Buckler will be a fast, safe, and fun tournament. The Single Sword tournament will be a serious, safe, and fun tournament.

Weapons shall be any straight bladed single handed cut & thrust swords based on historical designs (including weight and balance) from the 16th or early 17thc including: Arming Sword, Broadsword, Backsword, Schiavona, Katzbalger, and Sidesword. In keeping with this intention weapons must weigh more than 900 g and less than 1500 g, and have blades less than 94 cm long.

March Beginners Course

Join our beginners course in Swordfighting. This course will teach the fundamentals of renaissance combat with Single Sword, Sword & Shield, and two handed Sword, according to the Bolognese tradition and particularly Giovanni dall’Agocchie’s 1572 book.

The first class is free to try 🙂

Class will start at 1:15 pm and finish at 2:30 pm every Saturday for 6 weeks and finishes on the 14th of April.  Students should wear comfortable black pants (tracksuit preferred) and a t-shirt. Equipment is provided, though students are welcome to bring their own.

Prices and Benefits
The whole course costs $170 for adults, and $145 for concession, which includes annual membership in the school and access to all of the regular classes at the school for 8 weeks, two weeks longer than the course.

Sword & Buckler Manciolino Style

Workshop with Richard Cullinan of Stoccata Sydney on the use of the Sword & Buckler including: attacks, defences, counters, fencing, fighting, redoubles, feints, chases, escapes, provocations, revenge, true love, and footwork.

All of the above can be found within Manciolino’s first assault which is a historical form meant to be practiced both with an opponent and solo. By the end of the weekend participants should been exposed to all of the parts of the first assault and able to put it together as a complete form in their own time in the weeks following.

Saturday 10th of February 2018:
Basics of S&B, 10:30 am – 1 pm
The 1st assault 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Sunday 11th of February:
The 1st assault 10 am – 4 pm

About Richard
Richard Cullinan first formally studied fencing in 1997 under Peter Linich, Maestro di Scherma. Building on this classical foundation, he branched out into historical fencing systems, and is recognised internationally for his research in Bolognese swordsmanship. He has also qualified as an Instructor at Arms in Classical Italian School fencing through the Fencing Masters Certificate program at Sonoma State University, California USA.
