Winter Open Tournaments

Have you been learning fencing for a while?

Now is the time to start competing – These Rapier, and Sword & Buckler, tournaments will be friendly and safe. Fight or Watch you will be welcomed, we even have swords and some protective equipment to borrow.

Schedule
Sunday 11th of August

9:30 am – Hall opens for rego and warmups
10 am – Registrations close
10 am – Rapier Tournament
12 pm – Lunch break
12:30 pm – Sword & Buckler tournament
2:30 pm – Finals
3:30 pm – Pub

Swords must meet weight and flex requirements – some swords will be available to borrow on the day as well.

All other rules – to be advised.

Costs
Participant – $25
Early bird – $15  (booked before 4/8/19)

Guy Windsor Workshops 2019

Guy Windsor is teaching a weekend of classes in Melbourne.

Saturday  and Sunday 9th and 10th of November.

About Guy

Guy is one the preeminent figures of Historical European Martial Arts, and has conducted research into most of the recorded swordsmanship styles between 1300 and 1800, and is a specialist in the works of Fiore dei Liberi, Phillipo Vadi, Ridolfo Capoferro, the anonymous I.33, and Domenico Angelo. He has authored numerous books on these topics and runs the School of European Swordsmanship, which he founded in 2001.

Sword fighting in a tournament

Swordfighting Beginners Course

Join our beginners course in Knightly Combat starting on the 9th of March 2019. This course will teach the fundamentals of two handed sword and other chivalric weapons according to Fiore dei Liberi’s book from 1409 AD.

The course runs for 8 Saturday morning classes from the 9th of March, taking a break for Easter, and concluding on the 4th of May. Classes will be held at the Melbourne Salle (12 / 62-64 Oakover Rd Preston) and will start at 11 am and finish at 12:30 pm.

Pricing
As always, the first class is free. Bookings are required – we need to ensure there’s equipment for everyone.

The whole course costs $190 for adults, and $165 for concession, which includes annual membership in the school and attendance at all of the regular classes at the school as well. Equipment is also provided.

Swordfighting Beginners Course

Join our beginners course in Swordfighting. This course will teach the fundamentals of Italian Rapier according to 17th Century manuals. Rapier is the style of musketeers, courtiers, and duelists – a precise science from the enlightenment.

The course runs for 8 consecutive Tuesday evening classes from the 16th of October, and concluding on the 4th of December.  Classes will be held at the Melbourne Salle (12 / 62-64 Oakover Rd Preston) and will start at 6:30 pm and finish at 8 pm.

The first class is free! Please book to ensure enough equipment to go around. Students should wear comfortable black pants (tracksuit preferred) and a t-shirt.

Spanish Fencing Course

Join us over 6 weeks as we explore Spanish fencing from the ground up. Learn how swords and geometry intersect in your opponents body 😉

This exciting style of swordsmanship was popular in Spain and Portugal for three hundred years and focuses on universal principles for the single sword.

Details
The course runs for 6 consecutive Wednesday evening classes, starting on the 12th of September and concluding on the 17th of October. Classes will be held at the Melbourne Salle (12/62-64 Oakover Rd, Preston) and will start at 8:30 pm and finish at 9:45 pm. Wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.

Pricing
As always, the first class is free. Bookings are required – we need to ensure there’s equipment for everyone. If you’re already a monthly all-classes-included member, this course is included too!
Otherwise it’s $80 for students of the SHF and affiliated schools, or $145 for new students (this covers the cost of the class, as well as school membership and attendance at all SHF classes for the duration of the course).

Ton Puey Workshops

The School of Historical Fencing, in collaboration with HERA, is pleased to present a weekend of classes with Ton Puey  in Melbourne.

About Ton
Ton Puey grew up studying karate shotokan in his childhood and teenage years, before getting into sports fencing. He got historical in 2002, and around 2004 began researching and teaching the Iberian school of Verdadera Destreza. Ton has taught workshops in Spain, Portugal, France, Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, Austria, Russia and USA. Ton is a founding member of Asociación Galega de Esgrima Antigua -Galician Association of Historical Fencing- and a honorary member of the Spanish Federation of Historical Fencing. Ton also belongs to the editorial board of AGEA publishing, and to the European Association Hemac.
