Spadone Workshop

Marozzo Spadone - Guardia di Testa
This workshop will explore the principal guards, attacks, and defences of the two handed sword as explained by Achille Marozzo in his book Opera Nova (New Work).

The book was published in 1630s Italy and forms the core of extant material on the Bolognese school of swordsmanship, one of the few distinctive groups of treatises in historical fencing. The section on two handed sword, what later authors call Spadone is relatively late in the book and includes three assaults i.e. training forms. We will learn some parts of the first assault during the workshop.

Dussack afternoon

MS_A.4º.2_54r - edited

Meyer’s approach to dussack is both straightforward and creative. He outlines a series of drills that quickly progresses students from fundamentals to technical mastery, and builds an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of techniques by layering and combining them. Even experienced proponents of single handed styles are guaranteed to find new tricks and insights in this material, which is suitable for any cutting single handed sword.

Mark Holgate of Adelaide Sword Academy will be teaching the basics of fencing with Dussack according to Joachim Meyer, in this three hour seminar.

Participants can bring their own Dussack or buy one to be picked up at the event.

Old School Boxing Seminar

Two day seminar teaching the art of boxing as practiced by English 18th C prizefighters and WW1 soldiers.

The seminar will start with a two hour introduction to the various styles of boxing on a timeline from Mendoza to Haislet.

The rest of the seminar will focus on putting art into practice.

The Instructor
Stuart McDermid has been training in martial arts of one form or another for just shy of 25 years. After a long period exploring exclusively Asian systems, he came across the Modern Fencing-Kali blend taught by Guro Raymond Floro in early 2001 and became an instructor (now lapsed) after a few years of 1 on 1 coaching in knife, stick and standing striking.

Stu has run his own club since 2002 which initially offered training in Floro Fighting Systems whilst he researched and built a curriculum for practicing from European sources. Stu has taught and lectured at multiple Historical Fencing Conferences and given a number of seminars both in Sydney and Melbourne. Stu is a passionate student of coaching theory and in addition to his own research into the area has completed a Community Coaching Certificate with the Australian Institute of Sport.

Stuart currently teaches at Stoccata School of Defence in Sydney.
