Two Handed Sword Open Tournament

The Two Handed Sword Open is a set tournaments with a focus on historical techniques.

The single sword will be a fast, safe, and fun tournament. The two handed sword tournament will be a serious, safe, and fun tournament.

Two handed swords must be 100 cm or longer in the blade and 26 cm or longer in the handle.

Polearm Course (Spear, Poleaxe, Pike etc)

Join us over 8 weeks as we delve into the wonderful world of poking things with a variety of pointy sticks and hitting things with big big hammers. This course will aim to give participants an understanding of the basics of Spears, Poleaxes, and other cool pole weapons; drawing on medieval and renaissance fencing systems from Italy, Germany, Spain, and France.

Details
The course runs for 8 consecutive Wednesday evening classes, starting on the 4th of July and concluding on the 22nd of August. Classes will be held at the Melbourne Salle (12/64 Oakover Rd, Preston) and will start at 8:30 pm and finish at 9:45 pm. Wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.

Pricing
As always, the first class is free. Bookings are required – we need to ensure there’s equipment for everyone. If you’re already a monthly all-classes-included member, this course is included too!
Otherwise it’s $100 for students of the SHF and affiliated schools, or $155 for new students (this covers the cost of the class, as well as school membership and attendance at all SHF classes for the duration of the course).

Ton Puey Workshops

The School of Historical Fencing, in collaboration with HERA, is pleased to present a weekend of classes with Ton Puey  in Melbourne.

About Ton
Ton Puey grew up studying karate shotokan in his childhood and teenage years, before getting into sports fencing. He got historical in 2002, and around 2004 began researching and teaching the Iberian school of Verdadera Destreza. Ton has taught workshops in Spain, Portugal, France, Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, Austria, Russia and USA. Ton is a founding member of Asociación Galega de Esgrima Antigua -Galician Association of Historical Fencing- and a honorary member of the Spanish Federation of Historical Fencing. Ton also belongs to the editorial board of AGEA publishing, and to the European Association Hemac.

Swordfighting – Come & Try Class

Have you ever wanted to learn how to fight with a sword?
This free class will give a taste of fighting with a variety of Medieval and Renaissance swords and companion weapons.

Learn how to use the knightly longsword, and renaissance rapier. Plus the correct way to defeat a knight in armour and swash a buckler.

Session 1 10:30 – 11:30 will be all about the single sword
Session 2 11:45 – 12:45 will be all about the two handed sword
Session 3 1 – 2 pm will be all about sword & shield.

The Sidesword Open is a set tournaments with a focus on historical techniques.

Rules
The Sword & Buckler will be a fast, safe, and fun tournament. The Single Sword tournament will be a serious, safe, and fun tournament.

Weapons shall be any straight bladed single handed cut & thrust swords based on historical designs (including weight and balance) from the 16th or early 17thc including: Arming Sword, Broadsword, Backsword, Schiavona, Katzbalger, and Sidesword. In keeping with this intention weapons must weigh more than 900 g and less than 1500 g, and have blades less than 94 cm long.

Rapier: The Easy Way

With no bent knees, lowered backs or complicated stances we’ll teach you how to wield the rapier like the proud warrior you are. This 6-week course combines modern training methods, cutting edge (pun intended) scientific principles and historical sources to prepare you for greatness in the shortest time possible. The course is designed as an ongoing series of lessons, but each section can stand alone, so while highly recommended, attending all six sessions is not compulsory.

The course runs for 6 consecutive Wednesday evening classes, starting on the 11th of April and concluding on the 16th of May.
Classes will be held at the Melbourne Salle (12/62-64 Oakover Rd, Preston) and will start at 8:15 pm and finish at 9:30 pm, with time for sparring afterwards. Wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.

Beginner Basics & Instructor Instruction Day

Many classes will be delivered by student instructors on a variety of swordfighting systems, this could include: longsword, dagger, rapier, sidesword, greatsword, or sword & shield.

This is a great opportunity for beginners to learn fundamentals from the ground up and for teachers to learn pedagogy.

Instructors will be taught, the how, the when, and the why of teaching historical fencing.
